This comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will formally recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th UN General Assembly, reaffirming its commitment to a two-state solution.Carney said the Palestinian Authority has committed to key reforms, including holding long-delayed elections in 2026, from which Hamas will be excluded, and pledging not to militarize the Palestinian state. The move follows similar steps by France and conditional support from the UK, and comes amid heightened international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.Carney added that Canada remains committed to Israel’s right to exist in peace and security, but lasting peace requires a viable, stable Palestinian state. The announcement came after Carney spoke with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the situation in Gaza and the UK’s position on Palestinian statehood.
