Tesla expands operations in India: Job openings signal market entry

NEW DELHI: Tesla Inc. has initiated recruitment in India, indicating its imminent market entry following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and its chief executive officer Elon Musk in US.
The company advertised 13 positions on its LinkedIn page on Monday, encompassing both customer-facing and administrative roles.
The available positions were distributed across Mumbai and Delhi, with at least five roles, including service technician and advisory positions, open in both cities. The remaining positions, such as customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, were specifically for Mumbai.

The relationship between Tesla and India has been intermittent, with the carmaker previously hesitating due to high import duties. Recently, India reduced its basic customs duty on premium vehicles priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%.
Despite India’s electric vehicle sector being smaller compared to China’s, it presents an opportunity for Tesla amid declining sales. While India recorded nearly 100,000 electric car sales last year, China achieved 11 million units.
Tesla’s interest in India follows PM Modi’s discussions with Musk and US President Donald Trump in Washington last week. Trump subsequently announced that PM Modi agreed to commence negotiations addressing the US trade deficit and defence purchases, including potential F-35 fighter jet acquisitions.
Whilst Musk serves in Trump’s cabinet, there was no clarification whether his meeting with PM Modi was in his capacity as CEO of private enterprises or as a DOGE team member.
The overlap between Musk’s business and political interests is evident. Recently, Italy disclosed discussions with Musk’s SpaceX regarding secure government telecommunications, following Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s meeting with then President-elect Trump in Florida.
