NASA Alert! Car-sized asteroid 2026 FM3 set to pass 238,000 km from Earth; could it pose a threat

NASA has confirmed that a car-sized asteroid, designated 2026 FM3, will make a close approach to Earth on 25 March 2026. The asteroid is expected to pass at a distance closer than the Moon’s orbit. NASA scientists report that the flyby does not present a threat to the planet. Monitoring such objects is an essential component of planetary defence efforts. The observation of 2026 FM3 will allow astronomers to gather detailed data on its size, orbit, and composition, which can improve future tracking and prediction of near-Earth objects.

NASA confirms asteroid 2026 FM3 set to pass today: Size, characteristics and distance

Asteroid 2026 FM3 is estimated to be approximately 15 feet (4.5 metres) in diameter, comparable in size to a small car. Its relatively small size classifies it as a minor near-Earth object. The asteroid’s mass and dimensions indicate that it would not survive passage through the Earth’s atmosphere in the event of a collision. Experts note that an object of this size would disintegrate completely due to the heat generated by atmospheric friction. The asteroid is projected to pass at a distance of around 238,000 kilometres from Earth. For comparison, the average distance to the Moon is approximately 384,000 kilometres. The trajectory of 2026 FM3 has been accurately calculated using radar and optical observations. Its close approach provides an opportunity for precise measurement of its orbital parameters and for the testing of observational technologies.

Atmospheric entry behaviour of 2026 FM3 and the frequency of small asteroid flybys

The high heat and friction produced by the atmospheric entry would result in ablation, producing a fireball observable from the ground. This phenomenon, although noteworthy from a scientific point of view, does not pose a threat to human life and property. This phenomenon is consistent with the predicted behavior of a small near-Earth object entering the atmosphere.Approaches by small asteroids are more common than the general public may think. Many small asteroids approach the Earth on a yearly basis without being detected due to their small size.

Significance for planetary defence

Observing asteroid 2026 FM3 contributes to planetary defence initiatives by improving detection and prediction capabilities. NASA and other space agencies utilise data from flybys to refine models of asteroid trajectories. Information about an asteroid’s speed, composition, and orbital characteristics is integrated into early warning systems. Such monitoring is a critical element of strategies designed to mitigate the impact of potentially hazardous asteroids.
