TCS onboarding delays leave lateral hires in limbo

BENGALURU: Amid uncertainty over onboarding, lateral hires offered roles at TCS are now rethinking their resignations. Recently, TCS informed candidates that their onboarding would be contingent upon business requirements, leaving approximately 650 lateral hires in a state of uncertainty. These individuals, who possess varying levels of experience, were initially scheduled to join the company between July and Sept. “It’s almost the last leg of my notice period. I cannot afford to be without a job. Hence, I spoke to my current manager and revoked my resignation,” one candidate said on condition of anonymity. While this techie managed to retain his position, another wasn’t as fortunate – his organisation does not permit resignation withdrawals. Though he wanted to stay, the company refused to take him back. While some have managed to stay on, others are hoping for a stroke of luck as they continue waiting for updates from TCS. A techie who rejected a counteroffer from his current employer a few months ago upon resigning for TCS is now uncertain about his future. With no clear communication from TCS, he is considering how to approach his reporting manager in hopes of staying on. Candidates told TOI on condition of anonymity that TCS HR representatives are reaching out to ask if they are still interested in joining the company. However, the firm is not providing any confirmed joining dates. “They were asking me when I can join – Aug or Sept. He gave me a date for Monday or Wednesday in Aug but didn’t commit to which one,” an affected engineer said. According to candidates, the HR team has conveyed that there is no clear visibility on when onboarding will happen. In some cases, TCS has sent out pre-joining verification emails, with the process to be conducted virtually. “My joining date was July 9. After speaking with my HR, it has now been postponed to October. However, the email still mentioned that they would take me through the joining documents,” one candidate shared. For many, onboarding has now been pushed to Oct, adding to the uncertainty faced by lateral hires. An email sent to TCS did not elicit a response till the time of going to the press.
