Steel safeguard push: Industry seeks anti-dumping duties on cheap imports, flags urgent need amid trade uncertainties

The Indian stainless steel industry has sought anti-dumping duties on low-priced imports from select countries, citing an urgent need to protect domestic players in the face of global trade uncertainties.Jindal Stainless Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal said the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), representing the industry, has petitioned the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) to investigate the dumping of stainless steel items into the domestic market. The industry is now awaiting the start of the investigation. The DGTR, under the Ministry of Commerce, is the nodal authority for administering trade remedial measures, including anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard duties.“The application was filed around the end of June. DGTR also takes two to three months to start an investigation,” Jindal told PTI.Pressed on whether the imposition of duties was urgent given global uncertainty and recent US tariff moves, he replied, “Definitely… because for a very long time we have been suffering with substandard dumped material from countries like China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and looking at now absolutely these trade uncertainties globally, it’s definitely required to protect our borders, protect our homegrown companies.“Situation is urgent because this is where the growth is coming. India is where the market is growing,” he said.As per market research firm BigMint, India’s stainless steel imports rose to 1.73 million tonnes in FY25, with China, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea being the major contributors.
