Sona Mohapatra slams Jasleen Royal for out-of-tune Coldplay opening act: 'There are much worthier performers'

Jasleen Royal received heavy criticism for her opening act at Coldplay’s concert in Mumbai, with many fans feeling disappointed by her performance, which they described as “out of tune.” Singer Sona Mohapatra has now weighed in, expressing that Jasleen appeared to be unprepared for the performance.
In an interview with Indie’N Folk Project, Sona expressed disappointment over Jasleen Royal’s controversial performance at Coldplay’s concert. She felt that Jasleen’s act sounded off-key, especially considering the grand stage and opportunity. Sona suggested that Jasleen may have been poorly prepared for the performance, even though a full band and backing singers were involved.

Mohapatra further criticised the industry for valuing artists based on their views and followers rather than their true talent. She pointed out that being a successful songwriter or having a viral video doesn’t necessarily make someone a great performer. According to Sona, the lack of a merit-based system in the industry prevents deserving performers from being recognized.

The singer also retracted the term “artiste” and disagreed when Jasleen was referred to as a “performer.” Sona expressed that Jasleen wasn’t suited for the stage, and it was disheartening that the public witnessed this. She emphasized that the performance was a letdown, especially on such a big stage.
Sona Mohapatra expressed that the moment was heartbreaking, clarifying she wasn’t celebrating anyone’s failure. She questioned the criteria used to choose Jasleen for such a high-profile performance, hinting at concerns over how decisions are made in the industry.

Jasleen Royal, known for hits like Ranjha and Din Shagna Da, performed as the opening act for Coldplay’s recent concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. However, her performance sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many fans expressing disappointment, particularly over her singing quality during the high-profile event.
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri had also criticised Jasleen Royal’s performance, highlighting that the audience seemed to have more musical talent than the auto-tuned singers. He questioned if she would have even made it to an audition without her social media following, suggesting that follower count is now prioritized over actual talent.
