‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ directors address copyright controversy on the film’s sequel

The romantic drama, ‘Sanam Teri Kasam,’ is seeing renewed success with its re-release, attracting large audiences after its initial release in 20165. The film, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, has earned over Rs. 40 crores in earnings.
Recently, directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru stirred excitement by suggesting a sequel to ‘Sanam Teri Kasam.’. However, this was followed by a copyright concern raised by the film’s producer, Deepak Mukut, who asserted that the rights to the film’s intellectual property are under his ownership. Now, the directors are addressing the issue, clarifying that there is no conflict among them.

Vinay Sapru told Hindustan Times, “Sanam Teri Kasam begins with a flashback. We wrote part two of the film at that time only. We wanted to go ahead with a second part, but unfortunately for whatever reason, we couldn’t. Nobody even asked for it all this while, until now. This (confusion) has been happening because of the interviews.”

He also clarified the air regarding the announcement of the sequel. He said that there will be another story of love and promises that will arrive on Valentine’s in 2026, but they did not announce a film. He added that he loves his team, including the producer and actors. He also mentioned that Deepak is a dear friend, and they had dinner together recently.

When asked if Deepak would produce the sequel to ‘Sanam Teri Kasam,’ Vinay responded, “Why do you feel otherwise? We are a team. This journey is for all of us.”
Deepak Mukut, in a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, addressed the rights issue, saying, “The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the right to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me. I announced the sequel in September 2024 with Harshvardhan Rane in the lead. As for the directors (Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru), I haven’t had any discussion with them. They haven’t met and spoken to me about it. I have not finalized any director.”
Mukut also commented on reaching out to Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, stating, “They must reach out to me rather than the other way round, especially since they are giving interviews about making the sequel. I just want to reiterate that the rights belong to me.”. Mukut mentioned that the sequel’s script is being written, and production will commence once it is finalized.
