Miles Teller reflects on filming Michael Jackson biopic at Neverland Ranch: ‘It was surreal’

Miles Teller who is known for his roles in ‘Whiplash’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ recently opened up about the unique experience of filming scenes for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’ at the pop legend’s iconic Neverland Ranch.
Appearing on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ with Andy Cohen, Teller shared insight into his role as John Branca, Jackson’s long-time entertainment lawyer and discussed the challenges and emotions that came with shooting at the famous estate.
“We actually filmed at Neverland,” Teller revealed during the interview. “It was surreal. The ranch has such a complicated history, and stepping into that space was like stepping into another world.”
Neverland Ranch, once home to Michael Jackson’s elaborate amusement park and sprawling estate, holds a central place in the pop star’s life and legacy. The property was also at the heart of allegations made by choreographer Wade Robson, who accused Jackson of abuse during his time there—claims that were brought to light in the 2019 documentary ‘Leaving Neverland.’ Although Jackson vacated Neverland in 2005, Teller mentioned that the estate was under new ownership when filming took place. “It had been bought by someone else by then, but we dressed it up for the film,” Teller noted.
The highly anticipated biopic stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the lead role. Colman Domingo, a two-time Academy Award nominee, portrays Joe Jackson, the pop star’s father. According to a press release, the film aims to provide an “authentic and compelling look at the life of the man behind the music.”
Teller also reflected on his admiration for Jackson, sharing with Cohen that he grew up idolizing the King of Pop. “I was a huge fan as a kid. I even taught myself the moonwalk when I was 11,” Teller said with a smile.
Further, reports indicate that legal complications involving a settlement agreement with one of Jackson’s former accusers led to significant delays and reshoots. The production team reportedly faced what one insider described as a “nightmare scenario” while attempting to navigate these challenges.
Initially scheduled for release on April 18, 2025, ‘Michael’ is now set to premiere on October 3, 2025. Despite the delays, anticipation for the film remains high as fans eagerly await a new portrayal of one of music’s most iconic figures.
