Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson, has not stopped attracting fans but now he has a mystery donor who has broken all records as the person donated $36,500 to his legal fund. The earlier record of the highest donation was $30,000 and now with the latest collection from a person who does not want his or her identity to be revealed, the total fund reaches $722,00.
The mystery donor has added a small note explaining the gesture in which the person admitted that the action is mostly driven by intrigue.
“What intrigues me about this case is how unified folks’ responses are regardless of strata. In Corporate America, for instance, there has been widespread doubt of potential prosecutorial mishandling and overcharging. I’ve also been surprised at the almost ubiquitous nature of support towards the suspect that would expect to be quite bifurcated in this type of litigation. Quite exceptional,” the note read.
Result of viral sex tapes?
The arrest of Luigi Mangione revealed Americans’ weird fascination for an alleged killer because of his looks, his Ivy League education and the statement he allegedly tried to give against the country’s medical insurance industry by taking down a top honcho. While every move of Luigi Mangione, the color of his sweater etc has been noticed and his fans obsessed over them, recently his legal fund saw an uptick in donations after some sex tapes apparently featuring him went viral. His lawyer Karen Agnifilo clarified that the videos are fake and the man featured in them is not Luigi.
The viral tapes, hence, can be dismissed as the reason for the highest donation that came this week.
The legal fund was launched on December 9 after Luigi was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Since then, he has been in jail — first in Pennsylvania and then in New York. The fundraiser is run by a team of 15 volunteers from across the country.
