'I am overwhelmed and grateful': UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione releases first statement after two months in jail

Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has released his first public statement from jail, expressing gratitude for the support he has received, reports the New York Post.
This comes two months after his arrest for the high-profile murder that shocked the country.
“I am overwhelmed by – and grateful for – everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” Mangione said according to the website. “Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe. While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive.”
The statement was published on the homepage of a newly launched website set up by Mangione’s legal defence team. The site aims to counter misinformation and provide updates on his case.
The former tech entrepreneur, who attended an Ivy League university, is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4. He was arrested in Pennsylvania after a five-day nationwide manhunt.
Mangione had also written a manifesto criticising the healthcare industry. The bullets he used to shoot the CEO were engraved with the words “Deny, Defend, Depose,” symbolising a critique of insurance companies accused of delaying and denying claims, defending their decisions in court, and ultimately leading to the removal of officials.
26-year-old Mangione is currently being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Centre. His case has attracted widespread attention, with thousands rallying behind him, protesting with slogans like “Free Luigi” and also condemning alleged corruption by healthcare insurance companies in the US.
Recently, he accepted nearly $300,000 in donations from over 10,000 supporters, with fundraisers generating the substantial amount.
He has pleaded not guilty to several state and federal charges, including first-degree murder linked to terrorism. If found guilty in federal court, he could face the death penalty.
Mangione’s website has been verified as legitimate by Rolling Stone and also provides details on his prison conditions. His legal team noted that supporters have sent him numerous letters, photos, and books. However, they have requested that people temporarily refrain from sending more books, as he is only allowed to keep five at a time. Additionally, Mangione has asked that no more than five photos be sent at once.
Mangione’s next court appearance and hearing is scheduled for February 21 in Manhattan.
