Lanning, Sutherland guide Delhi Capitals to seven-wicket win over UP Warriorz in WPL

NEW DELHI: Captain Meg Lanning’s superb 69 off 49 balls powered Delhi Capitals to a seven-wicket win over UP Warriorz, securing their second victory in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in Vadodara on Wednesday.
Batting first, UP Warriorz posted 166 for seven, led by Kiran Navgire’s explosive 51 off 27 balls. However, the total proved inadequate as Lanning’s innings, supported by Annabel Sutherland’s unbeaten 41 off 35, Marizanne Kapp’s 19 not out off 17, and Shafali Verma’s 16 off 16, guided Delhi to victory with one ball to spare.

Delhi got off to a strong start, with Lanning and Shafali adding 65 runs in just 41 balls for the opening stand. Shafali fell in the seventh over, caught by Chinelle Henry off Deepti Sharma, while Jemimah Rodrigues departed without scoring in the next over, top-edging a paddle sweep off Sophie Ecclestone to Rajeshwari Gayakwad.
A crucial 48-run fourth-wicket partnership between Sutherland and Kapp helped DC stay on course. With 32 needed from three overs, Kapp eased the pressure with back-to-back boundaries off Ecclestone, before Sutherland sealed the win by striking two crucial fours off Tahila McGrath in the final over.
Earlier, Navgire and Dinesh Vrinda (16 off 15) gave UP Warriorz a flying start with a 66-run stand in just 5.5 overs. However, the innings lost momentum, with five wickets falling for just 52 runs.
Shweta Sehrawat (37 off 33) and Grace Harris (12) put on 36 runs for the fifth wicket before Harris chipped a simple catch to Shafali off Arundhati Reddy. Chinelle Henry’s unbeaten 33 off 15 provided a late flourish, helping UP Warriorz cross 160.
Sutherland was the standout bowler for DC, finishing with 2/26 in her four-over spell.
