Federal judge weighs motion to dismiss corruption charges against mayor Eric Adams. What's next?

A federal judge evaluated the Justice Department’s motion to dismiss corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday, while Governor Kathy Hochul contemplated his potential removal from office.
Adams maintained his regular schedule, including a staff meeting, speaking at an Albanian Islamic Cultural Center’s interfaith breakfast and making announcements regarding city safety and quality of life matters, US Today reported.
The previous day, Adams appeared before US District Judge Dale Ho, asserting his innocence. Ho questioned Justice Department prosecutors about their unusual request to dismiss charges without prejudice, allowing for potential future prosecution.
Adams, a former NYPD officer and Brooklyn Borough president seeking re-election, expressed confidence about potential refiling, maintaining his innocence. He told Spectrum News NY1 post-hearing that he was “a victim of a very overaggressive investigation.”
Acting US Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove’s motion cited the need for Adams to focus on illegal immigration and violent crime rather than addressing evidence. Bove dismissed concerns from federal prosecutors who resigned rather than support the motion.
Hochul consulted city leaders regarding Adams’ future, considering unprecedented removal powers. She might defer to voters in the June primary. Various New York leaders called for Adams’ resignation, with Brooklyn Young Democrats criticising his “quid pro quo dealings” and “subservience to Donald Trump.”
State Assembly member Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn led eight Black lawmakers defending Adams, warning against “double standards and unfair process when it comes to our leaders.”
The September indictment charges Adams with conspiracy, wire fraud, soliciting foreign campaign contributions, and accepting bribes. Prosecutors allege he concealed benefits and created false documentation.
The city charter permits gubernatorial removal after serving charges and allowing defence. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would become acting mayor if Adams is removed. If removal occurs before March 26, a special election would precede the June 24 primary.
