Elon Musk said that his company SpaceX plans to build a system that would allow anyone to travel to the Moon and, eventually, Mars.“SpaceX will build a system that allows anyone to travel to the Moon. This will be so insanely cool,” Musk wrote on an X post. He later added, “And Mars too.”Musk said such projects are essential to keeping humanity optimistic about the future. “Life cannot just be about one sad thing after another,” he wrote. “There must be things that make us super excited and inspired about the future. This is one of those things.”

Elon Musk’s SpaceX to Focus on building a self-growing Moon city

The comments follow Musk’s announcement earlier this week that SpaceX is now prioritising the construction of a self-growing city on the Moon.He said a permanent lunar settlement could be achieved in under 10 years, while building a city on Mars would likely take more than two decades. “The mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars,” Musk wrote.According to Musk, the Moon offers faster progress because launches can take place every 10 days and the journey lasts about two days. By contrast, missions to Mars are only possible when the planets align every 26 months and require a six-month journey.“This means we can iterate much faster to complete a Moon city than a Mars city,” he said.

Mars plans remain on the table

Musk added that SpaceX still intends to begin building a city on Mars within the next five to seven years, though the Moon is now the overriding priority. His comments align with his long-standing view that humanity must become a multi-planetary species to secure the future of civilisation.
