Electronics manufacturing: One more cluster approved for Tamil Nadu, says Vaishnaw, rail sector also sees fresh boost

The Centre has approved a third electronics manufacturing cluster for Tamil Nadu, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday, reinforcing the state’s growing role in India’s electronics production landscape. The move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making Tamil Nadu a major electronics manufacturing hub, he added.Vaishnaw, who holds the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and IT, and Railways, made the announcement via video conference during an event at IIT Madras.“One more electronics manufacturing cluster has been approved recently and I hope to see its construction very soon,” the minister said, adding that the state will gain modern amenities through such initiatives, as quoted PTI.Focus on mobile, laptop, server productionThe Centre is placing major thrust on mobile phones, laptops, and server manufacturing in Tamil Nadu, Vaishnaw said, citing a string of ongoing and planned investments.“Many new projects in mobile phone, laptop and server manufacturing are now getting set up in Tamil Nadu,” he said.In March 2025, the minister had announced the setting up of two electronics clusters worth Rs 1,112 crore in Tamil Nadu, including one linked to Zetwerk Electronics’ new plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai. These clusters will support the production of electronic components for consumer durables and IT hardware, catering to both domestic and international markets, he had said at the time.Vaishnaw, however, did not disclose investment details related to the newly approved third cluster. On the railways front, Vaishnaw highlighted Tamil Nadu’s emerging role as a manufacturing hub for high-strength wheels used in locomotives and high-speed trains.“They are now getting manufactured at a factory near Chennai. Railways has fully supported that factory so Tamil Nadu will become the hub for wheel manufacturing also,” he said. The minister also reiterated that Tamil Nadu is already a hub for Vande Bharat train manufacturing, reinforcing the state’s position as a key node in the Indian Railways’ infrastructure push.
