Display ‘be kind to animals’ message on public transport, Centre suggests to states

NEW DELHI: In the first such move in the country to sensitise people about animal safety, the Centre has suggested all states/UTs to display the slogan “Be kind to Animals” in English, Hindi, or regional languages on all public transport vehicles with effect from April 1.
Sending an advisory on the proposal, the road transport and highways ministry on Tuesday (Feb 25) said the slogan can be painted or can be put in the form of a sticker.
The ministry noted that the move to display such slogans was taken based on the receipt of submissions with respect to “promoting compassion towards animals and to promote safety of animals on roads”.
It advised that the colour of the font may be selected to enhance the readability depending on the colour of the public transport vehicle used in the respective state.
“This will help drivers be mindful of animals/birds on the streets and make roads safer for all,” said animal welfare activist Gauri Maulekhi while applauding the move.
Underlining that the slogan resonates with India’s cultural ethos, she said the ministry’s initiative will not only enhance road safety but also advance animal welfare.
