Critical minerals pact: India, Japan ink cooperation deal; pact to diversify critical supply chains

Union coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy said on Friday that India has signed an agreement with Japan in the mineral resources sector as part of efforts to build and diversify critical mineral supply chains. The memorandum of cooperation, signed between India’s Ministry of Mines and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), was announced while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit with his counterpart Shigeru Ishiba, PTI reported.Reddy said the partnership would be key to ensuring energy, food and national security while supporting India’s net zero emission targets. “This collaboration is part of our broader efforts to strengthen supply chains that are vital for the future,” he noted. The two countries also agreed to exchange information on mineral resources, policies and regulations, and explore joint investments in mining and processing projects in India as well as in other resource-rich nations.Alongside minerals, Modi and Ishiba committed to cooperation in multiple areas including health, economy, mobility partnership, artificial intelligence, science and technology, and rare earth elements.
