Korean Air on Monday announced a record-breaking $50 billion order for 103 Boeing aircraft and GE Aerospace engines and servicing, coinciding with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to Washington. The purchase marks the largest in the carrier’s history, as per Reuters. The order includes a mix of 787s, 777s and 737s worth about $36.5 billion, while a separate agreement with GE for engines and maintenance has been valued at $13.7 billion. Many countries negotiating trade deals with the Trump administration have recently unveiled, or are preparing to unveil, significant Boeing orders. The American planemaker has secured a series of major contracts in recent months.Korean Air CEO Cho Won-tae, who toured one of Boeing’s US factories ahead of the announcement, told Reuters the investment would help South Korea’s largest airline expand to more destinations across the United States, Latin America and South America.Cho said about half of the new 103 aircraft would be 737 MAX 10 planes, with the rest split between 777-9 and 787 jets. He added that around 80% of the new fleet would replace older planes currently in service. He noted that the company had faith in Boeing despite prior troubles the planemaker experienced.According to South Korea’s industry ministry, the Boeing portion of the order is worth $36.2 billion, alongside the GE deal. Boeing said the agreement would also aid Korean Air’s integration with Asiana Airlines, which it acquired last year.“As Korean Air transitions to a larger unified carrier, we are committed to supporting the airline’s growth with one of the world’s most efficient fleets,” Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes told Reuters.US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick hailed the deal as a boost for American exports. “The world recognizes that our aircraft are the most advanced in the world, and this administration is committed to reshoring advanced manufacturing jobs for Americans,” he said. The agreement follows earlier discussions. In March, South Korea’s industry ministry revealed Korean Air was preparing to finalise a $32.7 billion order for Boeing aircraft and GE engines. Last year, the airline announced plans to buy 20 Boeing 777-9s and 20 787-10s, with options for 10 more aircraft. The new order is separate from that commitment.Korean Air was founded in 1969 after the state-owned Korean Air Lines was taken over by conglomerate Hanjin Kal, is a founding member of the SkyTeam airline alliance.
