Apoorva Lakhia recalls Abhishek Bachchan refusing to do his film after six months of back and forth: 'Snatched my script from his hand and left his house'

Before establishing himself in Bollywood, Abhishek Bachchan faced several flops. During this time, Apoorva Lakhia approached him for his debut film Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost. Lakhia, who had assisted in Lagaan and Hollywood films, took time to finalize the lead actor.
In a recent chat with Friday Talkies, Apoorva recalled that Pahlaj Nihalani’s son, Vicky, agreed to produce his debut film. When he expressed interest in casting Abhishek Bachchan, he secured a meeting with him. Abhishek liked the script, but discussions lasted six months. Over time, the hospitality he received hinted at the project’s progress.

Despite the lengthy discussions, Abhishek ultimately declined the film after six months. Disappointed, Apoorva took back his script and walked away. However, a week later, he received an unexpected call from Abhishek’s secretary, hinting at a possible turn of events.

Apoorva had made up his mind not to apologize for his reaction. Vicky had already cautioned him that arguing with Amitabh Bachchan’s son could end his career before it even began. When he visited the Bachchan residence, he was made to wait for half an hour, subtly reminding him of Abhishek’s star status. When Abhishek finally arrived, he asked if Apoorva was upset, to which he firmly responded that he was.

The director expressed his frustration, saying that while Abhishek and Vicky Nihalani had secure careers, he had to worry about paying his rent. He felt his six months had been wasted and wished Abhishek had been upfront earlier. After a long pause, Abhishek asked when the film would start, breaking the tension. Apoorva’s firm stance earned Abhishek’s respect, leading to their strong friendship and a close bond with his family.
Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost also starred Lara Dutta. The film failed to impress the audience.
