'Police officers and firefighters to be chosen for skills not to meet DEI quotas': US Attorney General Pam Bondi

US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the dismissal of DEI-related lawsuits against police officers and firefighters, overturning cases initiated during the Biden administration. This move aligns with President Donald Trump’s directive to end what he calls illegal DEI policies in law enforcement and emergency services.
“American communities deserve firefighters and police officers to be chosen for their skill and dedication to public safety – not to meet DEI quotas,” Bondi said in a statement.
” These lawsuits, launched by the previous administration, unjustly targeted fire and police departments for using standard aptitude tests to screen firefighter and police officer candidates,” the statement added.
She further criticised the previous administration stating that, “Despite no evidence of intentional discrimination only statistical disparities — the prior administration branded the aptitude tests at issue in these cases as discriminatory in an effort to advance a DEI agenda.”
“And it sought to coerce cities into conducting DEI-based hiring in response and spending millions of dollars in taxpayer funds for payouts to previous applicants who had scored lower on the tests, regardless of qualifications, ” the statement read.
Trump and Bondi are dedicated to “ending illegal discrimination and restoring merit-based opportunity nationwide, and in all sectors,” it said.
Bondi has also been leading efforts to crack down on corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion policies under Trump’s directives. The administration has ramped up its push to limit DEI initiatives in the corporate sector, aligning with Trump’s broader agenda.
A recent directive from Bondi instructed the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to undertake investigations and impose penalties on “illegal DEI and DEIA preferences, mandates, policies, programs, and activities” within private organisations and federally funded educational institutions.
Major corporations have begun modifying or rebranding their DEI initiatives, while Trump has specifically addressed certain organisations, such as Apple, requesting their compliance with these changes.
The administration argues that DEI programs foster discrimination, particularly against white, heterosexual males.
This forms part of Trump’s broader agenda to transform federal governance. His directives include prohibiting federal staff from displaying pronouns in email signatures and mandating all federal agencies to “recognise women are biologically female, and men are biologically male.”
