'Attack' on police team: Court grants pre-arrest bail to AAP leader Amanatullan Khan

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday granted pre-arrest bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Amanatullan Khan who was booked over the alleged attack on a Delhi Police team in Jamia Nagar. Khan has been directed to join the investigation.
Delhi Police had sought Khan’s custody to question him and determine his presence at the scene of the alleged attack. In response, Khan filed for anticipatory bail in court.
According to the FIR, a police team arrived at the incident site on February 10 at 3 pm to arrest Shavez Khan, an accused in a 2018 case. However, Okhla MLA, along with 20-25 others, allegedly obstructed the officers.
On February 13, the court granted Khan interim protection from arrest until February 24, noting that the police’s claim—that he facilitated the escape of an accused—lacked merit, as the individual in question was already out on anticipatory bail.
The court previously criticized Delhi Police for failing to file a supplementary charge sheet against Shavej Khan and not revoking his proclaimed offender (PO) status despite his anticipatory bail. During the hearing, additional public prosecutor Atul Shrivastava argued that custodial interrogation was necessary due to contradictions between the statements of Amanatullah Khan and Shavej Khan.
