NEW DELHI: Yashasvi Jaiswal tore into Arshdeep Singh to start Rajasthan Royals’ chase with a bang, smacking 22 runs off the first over — the most ever conceded by a Punjab Kings bowler in the first over of an IPL innings. After a dot on the second delivery, he cleared mid-off for another boundary. The fourth ball saw Jaiswal shuffle across for a cheeky scoop that looped over the keeper’s head. Who’s that IPL player?The carnage continued with a wristy six flicked off Jaiswal’s pads over square leg, before a thick outside edge flew past short third for a fourth four in the over — taking Jaiswal to 22 off six balls (4 0 4 4 6 4) and setting the tone for the chase.

The onslaught came in response to a dominant batting show by Punjab Kings, who posted a formidable 219/5 earlier in the afternoon.Nehal Wadhera hammered a career-best 70 off just 37 balls, peppering the leg side with five sixes and as many fours. Shashank Singh provided late impetus with a blistering 59 not out off 30 deliveries, while PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer chipped in with 30. Despite early wickets, including debutant Mitchell Owen’s duck and Prabhsimran’s cheap exit, PBKS recovered strongly with Wadhera and Shashank’s aggressive partnership.

With the total in the bank, PBKS would have hoped for a disciplined start with the ball. But Jaiswal’s brutal takedown of Arshdeep has left the door wide open for Rajasthan Royals in a high-scoring thriller — and handed the pacer a forgettable piece of IPL history.
