Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh struck crucial half-centuries, following Yuzvendra Chahal’s stunning hat-trick, as Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings by four wickets to officially eliminate the five-time champions from the IPL 2025 playoff race at Chepauk on Wednesday.
With this win, Punjab rose to second on the points table with 13 points, while CSK, languishing at the bottom with just four points from 10 matches, saw their slim hopes extinguished.

Chasing 191, Punjab made a confident start. Openers Priyansh Arya (23) and Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 36) set the tone with a brisk stand, scoring at nine runs per over. Prabhsimran survived a close LBW review against Jadeja but went on to showcase a range of innovative shots — reverse sweeps, scoops, and powerful straight hits.
Who’s that IPL player?
Skipper Iyer (72 off 41) anchored the chase masterfully, mixing composure with aggression. His assault on Matheesha Pathirana in the 17th over — two sixes and a four — sealed the deal for Punjab despite some late jitters. His 72-run partnership with Prabhsimran laid the foundation for the successful chase, completed with two balls to spare at 194/6.
Earlier, CSK rode on Sam Curran’s career-best 88 (47 balls) and his 78-run stand with Dewald Brevis (32) to post what seemed a competitive 190.
But Chahal flipped the script late. The leg-spinner, wicketless till the 19th over, bagged four wickets — including a hat-trick and the prized scalp of MS Dhoni — to dismantle CSK’s death overs push.
Chahal’s second IPL hat-trick and his ninth four-wicket haul sealed CSK’s fate — and showcased Punjab’s rising playoff credentials.
Brief scores:
Chennai Super Kings: 190 all out in 20 overs (Sam Curran 88, Dewald Brevis 32; Yuzvendra Chahal 4/32, Marco Jansen 2/30)
Punjab Kings: 194/6 in 19.4 overs (Shreyas Iyer 72, Prabhsimran Singh 54; Matheesha Pathirana 2/45, Khaleel Ahmed 2/28)
Result: Punjab Kings won by 4 wickets
