Who is Mike Waltz? Trump's national security adviser at the center of Yemen chat leak

Mike Waltz, a former US Army Green Beret and Florida congressman, currently serves as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser. Known for his hawkish stance on China and deep-rooted experience in defense policy, Waltz has emerged as a key figure in shaping the administration’s foreign policy.
Military background
Waltz is a decorated military veteran with 27 years of service in the US Army and National Guard, retiring as a colonel, reported ABC News. As a Green Beret, he led multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa. His firsthand experience in conflict zones has shaped his aggressive approach to national security.
Political career
Elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018, Waltz represented Florida’s 6th District. During his time in Congress, he served on the Intelligence, Armed Services, and Foreign Affairs committees, gaining a reputation as a defense and foreign policy expert. He was also a member of the House China Task Force, focusing on countering Beijing’s growing influence.
Trump appointed Waltz as national security adviser in November, calling him a “nationally recognized leader in national security” and an expert on threats from China, Russia, and global terrorism.
Role in Trump’s inner circle
Waltz played a key role during Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, serving as a prominent surrogate and frequent critic of the Biden-Harris administration’s foreign policy. His appointment reflects Trump’s focus on a more assertive national security posture.
From the Bush administration to Trump’s White House
Before entering politics, Waltz worked in the Pentagon and White House under President George W Bush. His background in military intelligence and national security policy made him a natural fit for Trump’s team.
Despite recent controversy over a leaked Signal group chat discussing Yemen war plans, Trump has stood by Waltz, describing him as a “good man” who has “learned a lesson.”
