India had a momentous event in 1996 when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, came to Mumbai. It was greeted with a grand reception at the Sahar Airport, where thousands flocked to glimpse the international superstar. Some of those who welcomed him with much fanfare were Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre and Raj Thackeray, the son of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

The MJ fever was in the air all over the city. Michael Jackson’s show on November 1, 1996, at the Andheri Sports Complex was completely sold out, with more than 35,000 fans present. His diehard fans came as early as 2 pm, and actually, the concert started at 3.30 pm when the gates were opened and fans started screaming at the sight of Jackson on the podium, which was designed in the shape of the letter D.
