When Sonali Bendre and Raj Thackeray greeted Michael Jackson in India with love and warmth

India had a momentous event in 1996 when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, came to Mumbai. It was greeted with a grand reception at the Sahar Airport, where thousands flocked to glimpse the international superstar. Some of those who welcomed him with much fanfare were Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre and Raj Thackeray, the son of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.
Michael Jackson landed in Mumbai on October 30, 1996, in his personal plane. The airport was brought to a halt as officers, crew, and passengers rushed to welcome him. Sonali Bendre, in a traditional nine-yard sari and a Maharashtrian nathni, greeted Jackson with an aarti thali, conducting a traditional Indian welcome ritual by tilaking his forehead. Raj Thackeray and his mother Sharmila Thackeray also attended, giving Jackson a massive garland.
The welcome ceremony was more than just a gesture of humility. During the function, as part of the cultural exchange, the known Indian politician Raj Thackeray organized lezhim dancers, dressed all in the traditional Maharashtrian attire, to the audience accompanied by a group of dholaks playing the rhythmic tones.
The Tabla and the Tanpura are the symbols of India’s music culture that were presented to Michael Jackson by Bal Thackeray during his stay in Mumbai to express the appreciation the people of India had for his contribution to music. The MJ fever was in the air all over the city. Michael Jackson’s show on November 1, 1996, at the Andheri Sports Complex was completely sold out, with more than 35,000 fans present. His diehard fans came as early as 2 pm, and actually, the concert started at 3.30 pm when the gates were opened and fans started screaming at the sight of Jackson on the podium, which was designed in the shape of the letter D.
Jackson’s trip was not only performances; it was also about connection on a human level. He interacted with orphans. He offered them chocolates and toys and wrote a touching note when he left. This move was a sign of his love for India and the people of the country, as he reiterated in a heartfelt message left at the hotel.
Michael Jackson’s visit to India remains a cherished memory for many. His impact on Indian pop culture is still evident, with his music continuing to inspire generations. As Bollywood star Hard Kaur noted, “Go to any village, any corner in India and you’ll find everyone is familiar with the name Michael Jackson”. The reception by Sonali Bendre and Raj Thackeray was a reflection of India’s hospitality and its capacity to welcome global icons with respect and warmth.
