Warren Buffett reveals the key trait to look for in partner for a successful marriage

Considering the contemporary times we live in, modern relationships have become quite complex. While relationships are tough to maintain, marriages too have become increasingly tough to sustain in today’s fast-paced world. With rising stress from careers, financial pressures, and social media influences, couples often struggle to maintain emotional connection and communication. Changing societal expectations and individual priorities can often create friction in marriages, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts. Additionally, unrealistic portrayals of relationships in media also set unattainable standards, causing dissatisfaction for many couples. And while love is essential for any relationship to survive, successful marriages now also require other key characteristics for them to survive the test of time.
Talking on these lines, billionaire Warren Buffett once shared his one tip for a successful marriage. Speaking to people at Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, Buffett said, “Think for a minute if you want to get married, and you want to a marriage that lasts. Not necessarily the happiest marriage, or the one that Martha Stewart will talk about or anything. You want a marriage that lasts.” He then asked, “What is the one character you will look for in your spouse? Do you look for brains? Do you look for humour? Do you look for character? Do you look for beauty?”

You realize you know a lot about their favorite Netflix shows but almost nothing about their emotions. Waiting to hear those 3 magical words pop out of their mouth? Well, odds are they’ll keep you waiting. Commitment-phobes dislike making the relationship official in any possible way– be it saying ‘I love you’ or being vulnerable to you.

Revealing the key trait to look for in partner for a successful marriage, Buffett further said, “No! You look for low expectations. That is the marriage that is going to last where both (the partners) have low expectations (from each other).”
While the audience laughed at the suggestion, Buffett’s tip does make one ponder. Isn’t it true that sometimes we do tend to have really high expectations from our partner which often leads to misunderstanding, disappointments, and even fights? And in the long run, it might even be detrimental to the relationship. No wonder then, accepting people as they are and having low expectations from them is definitely the key to a successful marriage, as per Buffett.
