US stocks today: Wall Street trades in red ahead of crucial week; Dow slips 60 points, Nasdaq down 0.11%

This week will see major US retailers including Home Depot, Lowe’s and Walmart publish their quarterly results. Analysts say these updates will provide a closer look at how President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs are filtering through to the economy. Trump has introduced a 10-percent tariff on almost all US trading partners, along with higher duties on dozens of others. Economists, however, point out that it usually takes time to see the full impact of tariffs on consumer prices. “We have to wait for the parade of the big box retailers tomorrow and the rest of the week,” said Art Hogan of B. Riley Wealth Management. “In the tariff environment we’re in, that’s probably going to be revelatory,” he added. “We’ll find out how they’re mitigating tariffs and what their margins look like.” Beyond company results, investors are also focused on the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in Wyoming, where global central bankers are gathering this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak on Friday, with markets hoping for signals on the Fed’s direction for interest rates and any upcoming policy shifts. Meanwhile, geopolitical developments are also on investors’ radar. European leaders are set to join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in talks with Trump on Monday, as part of efforts to find a resolution to Russia’s ongoing offensive.
