United States second lady Usha Vance is all set to visit Greenland this week, the most high-profile visit since the Trump administration eyed the mineral-rich territory of American ally Denmark.
During the three-day visit, Usha Vance will be accompanied by one of her children and visit “historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race.” She will arrive Greenland on Thursday.
The prestigious race features approximately 37 mushers and 444 dogs, showcasing exceptional coordination and athleticism. Vance’s office expressed enthusiasm about witnessing this significant sporting event and participating in the celebration of Greenlandic traditions.
Greenlandic and Danish news sources indicate that Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser, will join Vance during this week’s visit.
Since his return to office, Trump continues to assert that US control over Greenland is inevitable, citing national security considerations rather than territorial expansion motives.
Following his January 20 second term inauguration, Trump reiterated his confidence in acquiring Greenland. The US maintains a military installation there, which Donald Trump Jr. visited in January.
In discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Oval Office, Trump questioned Denmark’s territorial claims over Greenland, suggesting their historical connection was tenuous.
Greenland’s parliamentary parties unanimously opposed Trump’s statements last week. Denmark acknowledges Greenland’s autonomy to determine its independence timeline.
Trump’s territorial interests extend beyond Greenland, including suggestions about Panama’s canal, Canadian statehood, and transforming Gaza into a coastal resort destination.
