UP CM Yogi Adityanath meets Nepal’s ambassador as protests shake Kathmandu

NEW DELHI: Nepal’s Ambassador to India Shankar Sharma met Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow to discuss bilateral relations at a time of growing unrest in Nepal over demands to reinstate the monarchy.
Sharma took to social media to share details of the meeting, stating, “Very pleased to meet chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri @myogiadityanath in Lucknow today. We talked extensively about a wide array of issues in Nepal-India relations. I would especially like to thank him for initiating an awe-inspiring Gurkha museum in Gorakhpur.”
The meeting on Monday followed last week’s violent pro-monarchy protests in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area, where two people, including a photojournalist, were killed and more than 100 others sustained injuries. The demonstrations reflect a growing demand among sections of the Nepalese population for the return of the monarchy, which was abolished in 2008.
Adityanath, is perceived as a figure of influence among Nepal’s royalist supporters. Demonstrators at a recent rally in Kathmandu were seen carrying placards bearing his image, indicating his symbolic presence in their movement, PTI reported citing My Republica.
