The investigation revealed a pattern where the man would target divorcees and widows through matrimonial websites, befriend them, and eventually marry them.
In a shocking case from Maharashtra’s Palghar district, police arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly marrying more than 20 women across various states in India and duping them of their money and valuables. Identified as Firoz Niaz Sheikh, the accused was apprehended by Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar Police (MBVV Police) following a complaint filed by a woman from Nala Sopara. The investigation revealed a pattern where Sheikh would target divorcees and widows through matrimonial websites, befriend them, and eventually marry them. Post-marriage, he would exploit their trust to swindle cash and valuables before disappearing.
Senior Police Inspector Vijay Singh Bhagal stated that the accused’s modus operandi involved befriending women online, marrying them, and then absconding with their belongings. The complaint filed by one victim detailed losses amounting to Rs 6.5 lakh in cash and valuables taken between October and November 2023.
Following the complaint, a thorough investigation led to the recovery of a laptop, mobile phone, debit and credit cards, checkbook, and jewelry from Sheikh upon his arrest in Kalyan, Thane district, on July 23. Further interrogation revealed that Sheikh had duped women not only in Maharashtra but also in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Gujarat since 2015. Police suspect there may be more victims yet to come forward.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the law for fraud and deceit. Authorities are urging anyone who may have fallen victim to similar scams to come forward and report their experiences.
