NEW DELHI: Indian Air Force on Saturday shared a post marking the first-ever landing of an aircraft at Leh, the highest airstrip in the world at the time, accomplished this day in 1948.
“The first ever landing of an aircraft at Leh, the highest airstrip in the world of the time, was achieved today in the year 1948, by an IAF DC-3 Dakota piloted by Air Cmde Mehar Singh”, IAF said in a post on Instagram.
Sharing an “interesting folklore”, it said that the people confused the aircraft with an animal and rushed to get fodder for it.
“An interesting folklore- having never set their eyes on any flying object, let alone an aircraft, the people of Ladakh, brought fodder for this ‘Animal’ that had come to their rescue during the troubled times”, the post read.
IAF also shared a black and white image of the event taken on May 24, 1948.
