This Chinese influencer makes Rs 35 lakh by ‘doing nothing’, sparks outrage online

A Chinese social media influencer has sent the world wide web into overdrive after announcing she makes an unbelievable Rs 35 lakh just for “doing nothing.” Her quirky choice of career has generated hotly contested discussions with some admiring her for discovering the secret of easy money and others incensed by what they describe as the ultimate expression of laziness. The social media influencer, who posts about her everyday life—or non-life—on social media, claims that it is her laid-back lifestyle that keeps her audience engaged. While opinions conflict and netizens have a field day, her rise to stardom has had many wondering if there is real value in content creation in today’s digital age. Here’s how she made ‘nothing’ into a fortune.

Lying in bed and making Rs 35 lakh? Chinese influencer’s bold claim ignites heated debates

Chinese influencer Gu Xixi, infamous for her over-the-top stunts, is back in the limelight once again. While going live on a stream, she made no bones about stating that she earned a whopping Rs 35 lakh (US$41,000) in one day—by doing nothing at all. Lying in bed, she raved about her humongous sales, taunting critics with, “The more you hate me, the more I make!”
Her complaint put social media abuzz, with others wondering how “hard-earned” money like this could be. South China Morning Post reports showed her astronomical earnings from Feb 8-16—more than 10.39 million yuan (Rs 12.1 crore) on a single platform alone! But when the criticism mounted, Gu Xixi was forced to do some damage control. Was she actually making a point, or just trolling her enemies for cash?

Gu Xixi’s outrageous journey—fame, fortune, and never-ending controversy

Gu Xixi is no stranger to controversy. Before becoming a household name for making millions “doing nothing,” she initially made waves for swallowing a ping pong ball on camera—why not, right? Her strange behavior has turned her into one of China’s most famous influencers, but not necessarily for the best reasons.
Her online life has been a rollercoaster, having been suspended several times for “vulgar content” and even having a criminal past. She once revealed that she was sentenced to two and a half years of probation at the age of 15 for affray. However, in spite of the scandals, Gu has accumulated a fortune, boasting of purchasing a Rs 24 crore mansion in Nantong.
After her recent remarks drew a backlash, she made a clarification that all of it was just a joke and done to provoke her critics. But whatever the case, one thing is certain—controversy has been her best-selling commodity.
