Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre is a well-known star in the industry and has been part of several blockbuster movies. In a recent podcast hosted by Humans of Bombay, the beautiful actress recalled her days working in Bollywood. The actress revealed that her costumes were rejected by Pooja Bhatt. She said that when she signed Naraaz which was released in 1994, with Mahesh Bhatt, the clothes for the second heroine were rejects of Pooja. She also revealed that the advantage of that was her rejected clothes were pulled off by Sonali.
She said, ‘But the advantage of that was that there were certain things that she couldn’t wear, such as fitted short dresses. Only a skinny body could have carried that off, and suddenly it looked fabulous and that one song from Naaraaz just made me. Somebody else’s rejects worked for me (sic).’
A look at Sonali Bendre’s interview
She shared the importance of looks in Bollywood and said that film is a visual medium and that is the business. Sonali further added that ‘Rejections, setbacks, or gaining certain positions or projects may have their own histories. For someone, it might have been a nightmare, or it may not align with their values while for someone it may be the exact thing they wanted! Let’s talk about a piece of garment as an example; perhaps it’s not the right size, shape, or style for a person. However, that doesn’t mean the rejected piece of garment itself, or that role, job, or position is worthless because someone rejected it. It reminds me of the quote ‘Someone’s loss is someone’s gain’.
Sonali said that being outside she remembered most of her career which she was not enjoying what she was doing. She said that she was shooting Naraaz and did not even know 5,6,7,8 was the cue. She said that everyone started dancing while she was still waiting for the director to call the action. She revealed that she felt embarrassed and like an imposter. Well, Bendre and Bhatt worked together in Naaraz, Zakhm and Angaaray.
