Located in the heart of Kolkata, The Oberoi Grand, fondly known as the “Grande Dame of Kolkata,” epitomizes luxury, comfort, and convenience. The hotel’s meticulously preserved neo-classical façade and grand pillared entrance showcase a harmonious blend of European and Indian architectural styles, reflecting Kolkata’s rich history as the “Cultural Capital of India.” The Oberoi Grand’s expansive veranda offers elevated views along the bustling Chowringhee Road and the lush Maidan, while its central garden serves as a tranquil oasis where guests can experience Oberoi’s legendary hospitality.

Steeped in history, The Oberoi Grand has been a silent witness to many pivotal moments in Kolkata’s past, from British colonial rule to Indian independence. A significant milestone in celebrating the hotel’s historic and cultural importance is the forthcoming ceremony where INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) will present the blue plaque to The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of INTACH, a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving India’s natural and cultural heritage. The introduction of the blue plaque aims to honor significant landmarks across the city, with The Oberoi Grand being one of fifty esteemed recipients. This accolade recognizes the hotel’s enduring legacy and its role as a cultural icon.

Affectionately referred to as the “Grande Dame of Chowringhee,” The Oberoi Grand’s history dates back to the 1800s. Initially the residence of a British Colonel, it was later transformed into a boarding house by Mrs. Annie Monk of Ireland. In 1914, Mr. Aratoon Stephen acquired the property along with the adjacent Theatre Royal and Calcutta Club, envisioning it as The Grand Hotel, Kolkata – an architectural marvel with five hundred rooms and modern amenities, including electricity, a novelty at the time.

The Grand Hotel captured the attention of Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, who acquired it in 1938. Under his visionary leadership, the hotel underwent extensive renovations, including upgrades to plumbing and wiring, the installation of hydraulic lifts – a pioneering feature for the city – and the introduction of new dining venues and live entertainment. The Oberoi Grand quickly became synonymous with exclusivity, attracting discerning guests seeking unparalleled luxury and hospitality.

Expressing gratitude for this prestigious recognition, Mr. Vikram Oberoi, CEO of The Oberoi Group, remarked, “We are deeply honoured to receive the blue plaque recognition for The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata. Standing witness to Kolkata’s storied history, The Oberoi Grand embodies a legacy of resilience and unwavering hospitality. As we continue to uphold the traditions established by our Founder Chairman, Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, and Chairman Emeritus, Mr. P.R.S Oberoi, we remain committed to offering our guests an unforgettable experience steeped in personalised service, understated luxury, coming together seamlessly with the hotels rich history.”
