The exhibit is inspired by Barnard Professor of Africana Studies Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. According to Vogue, the museum will highlight “garments, paintings, photographs, and more — all exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th-century through present day.” As Marie Claire points out, it’s the first-ever exhibit to highlight dandyism and the influence on style that Black men have held.
