The Sriram Sagar Project, the lifeline of Northern Telangana, is currently witnessing heavy floods. Authorities have opened 41 gates of the project, releasing 2.83 lakh cusecs of water into the Godavari River. At the project’s hydropower station, 27 megawatts of electricity are being generated through four units. Due to the heavy inflow from upstream, surplus water is being released into the lower Godavari, prompting former minister and Bodhan MLA P. Sudarshan Reddy to advise residents of surrounding areas to remain vigilant. He urged people to avoid the riverbanks and to take necessary precautions to prevent any unfortunate incidents. MLA Sudarshan Reddy, along with District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu, Police Commissioner Kalmeshwar, and irrigation officials, visited the Sriram Sagar reservoir located in Pochampad, Nizamabad district. They inspected the flood inflow from the upper regions and the release of surplus water through the 41 floodgates. According to officials, as of 4 PM, the reservoir had received an inflow of 2.65 lakh cusecs. The water level in the reservoir, with a full capacity of 1091 feet and 80 TMC, currently stands at 1088 feet with 70.140 TMC of water. Authorities are releasing about 2.83 lakh cusecs of surplus water, with 15,000 cusecs being released through the flood canal and the remaining water discharged into the lower Godavari through the floodgates.
MLA Sudarshan Reddy instructed project officials to continuously monitor the water flow and ensure that proper measures are in place to avoid damage to downstream areas. He warned that negligence in water management could lead to potential risks for the surrounding areas. At the Armoor municipal office, the MLA, along with the Collector and police officials, held a review meeting with various department heads to assess the situation in the flood-affected regions. They emphasised taking all necessary precautions to prevent inconveniences to the public.
Despite the continuous rainfall, authorities have implemented well-planned measures to ensure that there are no breaches in lakes or streams, and the public is not facing any difficulties. District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu noted that due to the release of surplus water from upstream projects in Maharashtra, the flood flow to the Sriram Sagar Project is expected to increase further, with an inflow estimated to exceed 4 lakh cusecs. He predicted that the heavy flood inflow into the reservoir will continue for another three days. Residents of downstream areas such as Mendora, Morthad, Yergatla, and Kammarpally, situated along the Godavari banks, have been advised to remain cautious. Under no circumstances should people go fishing or swimming in the river, he stressed. Police and revenue teams have also been deployed to monitor the situation closely.
