Stephen Fleming reflects on controversial Dewald Brevis dismissal in RCB vs CSK; what are the rules?

A controversial LBW decision involving Dewald Brevis during the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium sparked heated discussions. The incident occurred when Brevis missed the review window while running between wickets, leading to his dismissal despite replays showing the ball would have missed the stumps.
What happened?
The critical moment unfolded in the 17th over of CSK’s chase of 214 runs. Lungi Ngidi delivered a knee-high full toss that struck Brevis on the pad, prompting the umpire to raise his finger immediately.

Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja, apparently confused about the situation, continued running a single while the fielder executed a direct hit at the non-striker’s end from point. When Brevis finally attempted to review the decision, he was informed that the 15-second time limit had expired.
The situation led to an animated discussion between Brevis and Jadeja with umpires Nitin Menon and Mohit Krishnadas. Brevis had to depart for a first-ball duck, and subsequent replays confirmed the ball would have missed leg stump.
Stephen Fleming reflects on the incident

“Yeah, it was a big moment. In talking to Jaddu and Brevis, there was a lot going on with running straight away. I think they saw the ball ricochet and actually went to the boundary for four. And lost in that was whether Brevis took the review in time. I don’t know the answer to that. He wasn’t sure, given that they were running at the time,” said CSK coach Stephen Fleming after the match.
“As soon as you’re given out, I understand the timer starts. There was a fair bit eaten up with the play still being completed, and whether they just ran out of time… in the umpire’s view, it did. The other part about it, because he was given out, we wouldn’t have got the runs. While we would have maintained the wicket, it certainly wouldn’t have given us the five runs, which would have been nice. But it’s a big moment in a big game. There was twists and turns all the way through,” Fleming added.
What is the rule?

What went wrong with CSK in IPL 2025

The IPL 2025 playing conditions clearly state that players have 15 seconds between the ball becoming dead and requesting a review. If umpires believe this time limit has been exceeded, they can decline the review request.
