Srinagar court issues notice to Shivan & Narresh over Gulmarg fashion show controversy
A Srinagar court has summoned fashion designers Shivan & Narresh and the Editor-in-Chief of ELLE India, along with models, over allegations of obscenity and hurting religious sentiments during a skiwear fashion show in Ramazan. The incident has sparked significant public and political backlash, with a hearing set for April 8, 2025.

A Srinagar court has issued a pre-cognizance notice to luxury designer duo Shivan & Narresh, the Editor-in-Chief of ELLE India, and unidentified models over allegations of obscenity, public alcohol consumption, and hurting religious sentiments during the holy month of Ramazan. The controversy stems from a skiwear fashion show held on March 7 in Gulmarg, marking the 15th anniversary of the designer label.

The complaint, filed under Sections 296 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 50-A of the Jammu and Kashmir Excise Act, 1958, accuses the organizers of displaying inappropriate content that disrespected cultural and religious sentiments.

Legal proceedings and court’s stand

Special Mobile Magistrate Faizan-I-Nazar stated that before taking cognizance of the case, the accused must be heard, as per legal provisions. The court has issued a notice summoning the accused via registered post, warning that if they fail to appear, proceedings will continue in their absence. The next hearing is scheduled for April 8, 2025.

Political and public backlash

The event has ignited widespread criticism, leading to disruptions in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly’s Budget session. The controversy escalated after local residents, political leaders, and religious groups condemned the show, labeling it “obscene” and “inappropriate.”
In response to the backlash, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah distanced the government from the event, clarifying that it was a private affair with no official involvement.

Designers respond amid growing controversy

Following the uproar, Shivan & Narresh issued an apology, stating that the show was intended to celebrate creativity and fashion rather than offend any religious or cultural beliefs. However, their explanation has not quelled the outrage, and even photographers documenting the event are now under legal scrutiny.
