Sony and Legendary announced on Wednesday afternoon that their live-action Street Fighter film, based on the classic video games from Capcom, has been dated for release in theaters on March 20, 2026.
News of the release date comes shortly after word that Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian twin brother filmmakers best known for their A24 horror breakout Talk to Me, have exited as directors of the project. Details as to the plot of the film adaptation are under wraps, but given today’s news, you can expect that we’ll be hearing about a new director for this hot IP-based project sometime soon.
Sony will distribute the film, co-developed and produced with Capcom.
Legendary announced its acquisition of live-action film and TV rights to Street Fighter, one of the most iconic and influential series in the history of video games, in April 2023. The games revolve around an international martial arts tournament where fighters from around the world compete to prove their strength and abilities. The franchise gained massive popularity with the release of Street Fighter II in 1991, which introduced revolutionary mechanics such as combo attacks and special moves, and greatly influenced arcade and home console gaming. Subsequent titles have expanded the game’s universe, introducing new characters, complex storylines, and enhanced graphics and gameplay mechanics.
Since the franchise’s launch in 1987, more than 49 million units have been sold worldwide, making Street Fighter one of the most well-known and highest-grossing franchises of all time. The most recent installment, Street Fighter 6, was released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam last June.
Previously, the games have also inspired films like Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
While the weekend of March 20, 2026 is otherwise wide open for now, other titles set to open around that time include Warner Bros’ The Cat in the Hat on March 6, Mike Flanagan’s new take on The Exorcist on March 13, and Uni’s sequel to box office smash The Super Mario Bros. Movie on April 3.
