Police officials had to resort to lathicharge after the crowd agitating outside a local police station tried to torch a few pushcarts, two-wheelers and a cloth shop

Tension gripped Nagamangala town in Karnataka’s Mandya and prohibitory orders were issued after stones and footwear were hurled at a Ganpati procession on Wednesday.

According to sources, some miscreants hurled stones and footwear at a Ganpati procession that was proceeding for idol immersion, sparking communal tensions in the town. Following this, Hindu youngsters staged a protest outside a local police station seeking action against the miscreants, who were allegedly from a different community.

Police officials had to resort to lathicharge after the crowd tried to torch a few pushcarts, two-wheelers, and a cloth shop. The crowd was disbursed after a lot of effort.

The Ganesh idol was then immersed under the surveillance of police personnel. The administration then imposed Section 144 in the town to prevent any crowd gathering at night.

Meanwhile, additional forces have been dispatched from Mysuru to beef up security in the area. Police have started rounding up miscreants who hurled stones and attempted arson.

The Ganapati festival, which began on September 7 spans ten days of joyous celebrations, elaborate rituals, and other festivities and concludes with the grand visarjan, where Ganesha idols are immersed in water bodies amidst chants and music.
