A Sealdah court criticized the CBI for delays in Sanjay Roy’s hearing, accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor

A Sealdah court in Kolkata rapped the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for delays in the bail hearing of the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

On Friday, Judge Pamela Gupta expressed frustration after the CBI’s investigating officer and public prosecutor (PP) failed to appear on time. The hearing was delayed, leading Gupta to question whether the accused Sanjay Roy should be granted bail due to the CBI’s delay. The judge asked, “Where are the PP and IO? Should I grant bail?”

CBI Probe

The CBI lawyer, Dipak Poria, arrived late and briefly opposed Roy’s bail, arguing that releasing him could impede the investigation. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is currently engaged in a blame game with the BJP over the Kolkata rape-murder case, questioned how officials could be late in such a sensitive matter.

Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10. He has been held in judicial custody until September 20. During the hearing, Roy’s defense lawyer, Kavita Sarkar, argued for bail, stating that the CBI had not presented sufficient evidence against him. In response to the court’s handling of the case, TMC MP Saket Gokhale accused the CBI of attempting to release Roy and criticised the agency for its apparent lack of effort.

TMC Reacts

“CBI wants to get the rape and murder accused monster RELEASED on bail. An active effort is being made by CBI, BJP, and the Modi Govt to run a political agenda and BURY this case. How can the CBI allow this monster to get bail? What is the sinister agenda that is being played out? Why was CBI ABSENT in court today?” Gokhale wrote on social media X.

The case, involving the traumatic death of the trainee doctor last month, has drawn nationwide outrage. The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on September 9, focusing on issues of non-cooperation by the West Bengal government and delays in the investigation.
