Security forces dismantle illegal check posts in Manipur amid rising tensions

NEW DELHI: Joint security forces in Manipur have dismantled several “illegal check posts” set up by “village volunteers” along the Imphal-Churachandpur road, ensuring the free movement of vehicles.
Police on Saturday informed that these check posts had been established since the beginning of conflict in the state.
“Joint security forces dismantled volunteer check posts at Kaprang and S Kwatlian in Churachandpur District on NH-2… Security forces have taken over these locations and free movement of common vehicles is being ensured,” a police officer said.
Manipur’s prolonged ethnic conflict
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, with clashes between the majority Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribal groups in the surrounding hills. The unrest has led to over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands, exacerbating tensions in the region.
Amid the ongoing turmoil, security measures have been intensified, especially after the imposition of President’s Rule last week, following the resignation of N Biren Singh as chief minister.
FIR filed over fraudulent calls to legislators
Meanwhile, Manipur Police have registered an FIR regarding fraudulent calls made by unknown individuals attempting to mislead members of the state assembly.
“Manipur Police has received complaints about fraudulent calls from unknown individuals attempting to influence and mislead MLAs by exploiting the ongoing political situation in the state,” a police officer said.
A case has been registered at Imphal Police Station, and legal action is underway to trace those responsible for the calls.
