An FIR has been registered after an alleged scuffle broke out between Hindu and Muslim groups over illuminating public areas within a Navi Mumbai society with decorative light ahead of the Diwali festival.

The purported video that surfaced on social media showed some people in a heated argument which was triggered after a group of residents allegedly objected to lighting up the public areas and roads within the society for the Diwali festival.

The incident reportedly occurred in Navi Mumbai’s Panchanand Society at Taloja Sector 9, Maharashtra, said police, adding that they received a complaint from the members of the society who were allegedly threatened and abused.

Case Registered With Taloja Police

Acting on the complaint of the society members, the Taloja Police Station registered a case under appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including 79 (insulting woman’s modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 352 (disturbing public peace).

The matter was brought under control and further investigation is underway into the matter, said police, without elaborating.

This year’s Diwali, a preeminent Hindu festival that commemorates the homecoming of Lord Ram after 14 years of exile, will be celebrated across two days, on October 31 and November 1.
