NEW DELHI: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the Indian men’s doubles pair, must win their next match at the Paris Olympics after their second Group C game against Germany was canceled.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced that German player Mark Lamsfuss withdrew due to a knee injury, leading to the cancellation of matches involving the German team in Group C.

As per an ANI report, the BWF’s statement confirmed Lamsfuss’ withdrawal from the competition due to his knee injury. Consequently, the remaining Group C matches against the Indian duo and France’s Lucas Corvee/Ronan Labar are canceled, and all group results involving the German pair are nullified.
The Indian pair, known as ‘Sat-Chi,’ started their Olympic journey with a strong win over the French team of Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar, securing a 21-17, 21-14 straight games victory in 46 minutes. They overcame the French duo despite their home crowd support.
Satwiksairaj and Chirag were supposed to face world number 31 and 2022 European Badminton men’s doubles champions Marvin Seidel and Mark Lamsfuss, but due to the injury, this match is canceled. Their next match, crucial for advancement, is against the Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto on Tuesday.
The Indonesian pair, former world number ones and current world number seven, have won world championship bronze medals in 2019 and 2022 and were part of Indonesia’s 2020 Thomas Cup-winning team. The Indian and Indonesian pairs have faced each other five times, with the Indian duo holding a narrow lead with three wins. In their last encounter at the Korean Open 2023 final, ‘Sat-Chi’ emerged victorious.
Satwiksairaj and Chirag are seen as strong medal contenders at the Paris Olympics. This year, they clinched two Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour titles: the French Open in March and the Thailand Open in May. They were also runners-up at the Malaysian Open and the India Open and represented India in the 2024 Thomas Cup, exiting in the quarterfinals after a defeat to China.
