Rep. Krishnamoorthi urges Americans to avoid China-made routers over security concerns

US Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi has called on Americans to remove Chinese-made wireless routers from their homes, warning that they pose a cybersecurity risk. His remarks, made during a congressional committee hearing on March 5, follow claims that TP-Link devices could expose users to cyber intrusions that hackers might exploit to attack critical infrastructure, reported Reuters.
Krishnamoorthi specifically pointed to TP-Link routers as a potential threat, holding up one of the company’s consumer-grade devices during the hearing. “Don’t use this. I don’t have one at home either. It’s not a good idea,” he stated.
Concerns over cybersecurity vulnerabilities in Chinese-made technology have grown in recent years, with US lawmakers and officials increasingly scrutinising foreign-made devices for potential risks to national security. The call to avoid TP-Link routers comes amid broader efforts to limit reliance on Chinese technology in critical sectors, including telecommunications and infrastructure.
While no immediate response has been issued by TP-Link or Chinese authorities, the company has previously denied allegations of security risks in its products, maintaining compliance with international cybersecurity standards.
