The Royal Wedding!
It was one of the most talked-about weddings of the season: The Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, married Olivia Henson—now the Duchess of Westminster—at Chester Cathedral in June 2024. Prince William attended as an usher, looking dapper, and Princess Eugenie was also present to celebrate the couple’s special day.
The Royal Baby!
Now, there’s even happier news: Hugh and Olivia are expecting their first baby! It’s likely that Prince William will be named as the godfather, considering their long-standing friendship.
As reported by People, the couple shared their announcement through an official statement: “The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are very pleased to share that the Duchess is expecting a baby in the summer. The couple is delighted with the news and looks forward to starting a family together.”
This potential new role for William makes sense due to the close relationship between Hugh’s family and the royals. However, it is yet to be clear what Prince William’s potential new role will mean for his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales (widely known as Kate).
The longstanding ties:
Hugh’s late father, Gerald, maintained a long friendship with King Charles, making Hugh a godson of the king. Additionally, Hugh’s mother, Natalia, is Prince William’s godmother. Notably, the late Princess Diana was chosen by Gerald and Natalia to be the godmother of their second daughter, Lady Edwina Grosvenor.
Moreover, the Duke of Westminster shares a close friendship not only with Prince William but also with Prince Harry. Hugh was selected to be the godfather to both of their firstborn children, Prince George and Prince Archie. It’s clear that Hugh’s connections to the royal family run deep.
This close relationship is also why it made headlines last year when Prince Harry chose not to attend the wedding. It was described at the time as an “understanding between friends,” suggesting it may have been awkward for him and William to be together, given their recent rift.
