PM Narendra Modi lauds Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava: 'In dino to Chhaava ki dhoom machi hui hai'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday praised Chhaava, the recently released Hindi film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, starring Vicky Kaushal. The PM noted that the film is making waves throughout the country and acknowledged Maharashtra and Mumbai’s significant contribution to both Marathi and Hindi cinema.
Speaking at the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in New Delhi, PM Modi lauded the valour of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and referenced the historical novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, which introduced audiences to the Maratha ruler’s bravery.
“It is Maharashtra and Mumbai that have given new heights to both Marathi and Hindi cinema. And these days, Chhaava is making waves throughout the country (In dino to Chhaava ki dhoom machi hui hai). The introduction of Sambhaji Maharaj’s valour in this form has been made by Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel,” he said.
The film, which hit theatres on February 14, has been met with widespread acclaim, entering the ₹200 crore club and earning Rs 219.75 crore at the box office so far. As its popularity continues to soar, calls have intensified to make the film tax-free in more states. Maharashtra and Goa have already granted it tax-free status, with similar demands rising from other regions.
During his speech, PM Modi also highlighted the rich literary and historical legacy of the Marathi language, calling it a symbol of resistance against invaders during colonial rule. He paid tribute to iconic warriors such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, and Baji Rao Peshwa, emphasizing their indomitable spirit in battle.

“Marathi is a complete language – it embodies bravery, courage, beauty, sensitivity, equality, and harmony. It carries both spirituality and modernity, devotion and wisdom. Many saints from Maharashtra guided society through the Bhakti movement using Marathi as their medium. During centuries of oppression, Marathi became a symbol of freedom, and Marathi warriors like Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, and Baji Rao Peshwa brought their enemies to their knees,” the Prime Minister stated.
