PM Modi takes stock of flood situation in Northeast, assures help to Assam, Sikkim and Manipur

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took stock of the worsening flood situation in the northeastern states and assured all help and support. He spoke to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang and Manipur governor Ajay Bhalla as the death toll from landslides and floods rose to 36.“A short while ago, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam. I briefed him on how continuous rainfall in Assam and adjoining states has led to flooding and impacted many lives. I also apprised him of the relief operation undertaken by the state government. The Hon’ble PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts. Grateful for his guidance and unwavering support to the people of Assam,” Himanta said in a post on X.Likewise, Sikkim CM Tamang said, “Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, On behalf of the people of Sikkim, I extend my heartiest gratitude for your kind concern and support regarding the landslide and flood situation in the state. Our state administration remains fully committed to managing the situation and providing all necessary assistance to those affected. Thank you once again for your kind concern, Sir.“The death toll across the Northeast due to floods and landslides has risen to 36 since Friday, with two more casualties reported—one each in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.The flood situation in Assam has significantly worsened over the past 24 hours, with the number of affected people surging from 3.64 lakh on Sunday evening to 5.15 lakh by Monday.Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD has issued fresh warnings, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Assam and Mizoram, and heavy rainfall in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura on Tuesday, raising further concern for the region.
