Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said it is good fortune for those who were there to witness the first Diwali being celebrated in Ayodhya’s Ram Temple. He said this achievement has come after countless sacrifices and five centuries of penance.

“This is the first Diwali after Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram has been enthroned in his grand temple. After 500 years, this holy moment has come after countless sacrifices and continuous sacrifice and penance of Ram devotees,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

“It is our good fortune that we all have become witnesses of this historic occasion. I believe that the life of Lord Shri Ram and his ideals will continue to be an inspiration for the countrymen in achieving the resolution of a developed India,” he further added.

Ayodhya’s saint community on Wednesday expressed a similar sentiment and said the Diwali and the Deepotsav festival is significant as Lord Ram has “returned to his abode” in Ayodhya temple.

Thousands of earthen lamps were lit on the bank of Saryu River in Ayodhya in a world record-setting attempt to mark the eighth ‘Deepotsav’ on Wednesday.

Two Guinness World Records — most people performing aarti simultaneously and the largest display of oil lamps — were set at the eighth edition of Deepotsav. The two records were set in the holy city with over 25 lakh earthen lamps (diyas) lit together and 1,121 ‘vedacharyas’ (teachers of religious texts) performing aarti simultaneously.

Deepostav — a glowing spectacle marked by the lighting of diyas — is being organised in Ayodhya on a day prior to Diwali since 2017 on the banks of the Saryu river that passes through the holy town revered as the birthplace of Lord Ram.
