Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra has condemned the rape and murder of the female doctor in Kolkata, which has left the nation in shock. Parineeti called it horrific and said that if reading about the incident makes one feel so strongly about it, then one must think of what the doctor went through.

Taking to Instagram, Parineeti shared a post detailing the facts of the case. She wrote, “If it is too difficult for you to read, imagine what it was for her. Disgusting. Horrific. Hang him by his b***s.” Parineeti is among the few actors in Hindi cinema who have spoken about the crime.

Recently, Alia Bhatt also reacted to the brutal incident and issued a strongly worded statement to condemn it. “Another brutal rape. Another day of realisation that women are not safe, anywhere,” she wrote, drawing a direct comparison to the Nirbhaya tragedy that shook India over a decade ago. Despite the nationwide outcry and subsequent legal reforms, Alia emphasised that little has changed in terms of women’s safety.

The actress supported her statement with alarming statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2022 report. She pointed out that 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of the nursing staff are women, making them particularly vulnerable in an environment where violence against medical personnel is on the rise. She also highlighted the grim reality that since 2022, there has been a 4% increase in crimes against women, with over 20% of these involving rape and assault. Alia’s post further noted that nearly 90 rapes were reported daily in India in 2022, underscoring the pervasive nature of this violence.

The actress urged authorities to prioritise women’s safety, calling for the creation of safe spaces and increased protection measures. She criticized the societal structures that perpetuate such violence, stating that unless the root causes are addressed, nothing will change. Alia’s powerful message concluded with a call to action: “Don’t tell women to change their path—change the terrain. Every woman deserves better.” She stressed that women disproportionately bear the burden of ensuring their own safety, often with no real recourse or hope for change.
