Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic, ahead of her opening fight at the Paris Olympics. The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced this suspension on Saturday after an out-of-competition doping control conducted on Thursday.
The ITA has informed Ogunsemilore of the case and issued a provisional suspension following the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules. This provisional suspension prevents Ogunsemilore from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any Olympic-related activity during the Paris 2024 Games.
“The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules,” the ITA was quoted by Reuters. “This means that the athlete is prevented from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any activity, during the Olympic Games Paris 2024.”
The ITA also mentioned that Ogunsemilore has the right to challenge the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – Anti-Doping Division. Additionally, she can request the analysis of her B-sample.
Ogunsemilore, who is a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and African Games champion, was scheduled to face Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round of 16 bout on Tuesday.
